Learning and Qualifications

The main social care qualifications include:

  • Level 2 and Level 3 Diplomas in Health and Social Care.  These foundational courses cover essential skills and knowledge, preparing you for various care roles.
  • NVQs (National Vocational Qualifications). NVQs offer practical, work-based qualifications that assess your ability to carry out job tasks to a high standard.
  • Apprenticeships. Combining work with study, apprenticeships offer hands-on experience while you gain a qualification – meaning you can earn while you learn! Apprenticeships are available at various levels, from intermediate to advanced.
  • Specialist training. For those looking to advance in specific areas, there are specialist courses and training modules available, such as dementia care, autism awareness and mental health support.

Sarah, 25, started as a care assistant with no formal qualifications. Her employer enrolled her on an NVQ Level 2 course. Through on-the-job training and college support, Sarah gained her qualification and was promoted to a senior care worker role within two years.

These learning pathways provide flexible options to suit different needs and preferences, helping you build a successful career in social care.
